Transition to Front Office
Hi, I have been offered a middle office analyst role at an European BB while I always wanted to work in front office. I am quite keen on transitioning but I am unable to determine when is the right time. I read quite a bit about having to start from lower ranks once the transition happens. Would it be a good idea to explore the option of reapplying to grad (Analyst) roles which start in 2024 whilst completing my current role? Are there any other options that would be worth exploring ?
Can you move within the company? You could try to network with the FO parts of the bank that you are interested while in the middle office role then switch over after some time
I mean I went straight from back office to a front office role as an analyst but this was only because I had a really strong background in python especially in webscraping and building large language models ( no degree ). Python seems to be the way to jump a lot of hurdles imo
Your best route by far is to transition internally. Network, particularly if you're in a role where you're supporting an FO team directly (likely a product team). Get to know them, maybe get a coffee, and demonstrate your knowledge of the product and willingness to move.
I think that applying to grad roles at other banks is worth a shot, but you wouldn't be an obvious candidate, unless you have some outstanding background (e.g. very good school, previous internships, etc.)
The other options to explore would be (1) doing a MSc / MBA and trying directly for internships / grad roles from that, or (2) joining the grad programs of Big 4 firms, getting your ACA / CPA, lateralling to their Transaction Services / FDD / etc. teams, and jumping to FO banking (or PE) from there.
What about transitioning from another firm? I’m about to start a middle office trainee position soon at a company in Canary Wharf and I’m really keen on breaking into IB. How would I be able to do so? And would it be possible to connect? If you’re okay with it ofc
I think I made my views clear in my original post on this point, particularly for the first line.
Lateral hires, even for grad roles, from another firm just make you a complicated candidate next to the hundreds of target school applicants with multiple IB internships under their belts. Nothing is impossible obviously, but it's going to be extremely tough.
If you're really set on IB, I suggest a postgraduate (MBA or MSc) degree, or even better get yourself into the Big 4 and get an ACA / CPA. Then transition to their TS / FDD teams and move from there.
It can be quite easy to move internally at certain banks, I started at a back office role and after a year moved to middle office and then after making relationships with people within front office they asked me to join the team. There are always roles available on the internal job board in the front office but you may have to start with a role helping the team and once you’ve gained the knowledge and people trust you make a move into a full trading/ IB role.
