UNC IB Recruiting

Hey everyone,

I am an incoming freshman at UNC. I was wondering about the current recruiting landscape, as most information is outdated. Looking at the UNC finance society website, there seems to be lots of prestigous placements. Is UNC recruiting club dominated, and how hard is it to get into the top clubs(PMT, Reynolds, M&A)? It seems like they are dominated by cracked OOS kids. I didn't get assured admit to Kenan-Flagler, and my highschool stats aren't super impressive except for ACT, which makes me feel really behind already in terms of breaking into IB

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about UNC's IB recruiting landscape:

  1. Recruiting Clubs and Their Role:

    • UNC is not as club-dominated as some other schools like UCLA or UVA. While clubs like the Undergrad Finance Society (UFS), Portfolio Management Team (PMT), and Reynolds Fund exist, they are not the sole determinants of success in IB recruiting.
    • UFS is open to anyone and hosts banks on campus, making it a good starting point for networking.
    • PMT manages about $50k and is not highly selective, with no strong correlation between membership and BB placements.
    • Reynolds Fund, managing around $500k, tends to have better placement outcomes, but this is attributed more to self-selection of highly motivated students rather than exclusivity.
  2. Breaking into IB Without Assured Admission to Kenan-Flagler:

    • Not having assured admission to Kenan-Flagler or stellar high school stats does not put you out of the game. Success in IB recruiting at UNC is more about the effort you put in during college.
    • There are approximately 100 students per class serious about IB, with around 70 being highly competitive. This makes the landscape manageable if you are proactive.
  3. Networking and On-Campus Recruiting (OCR):

    • UNC is a target school for firms like Goldman Sachs (GS), Morgan Stanley (MS), JPMorgan (JPM), Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML), Deutsche Bank (DB), and Wells Fargo (WF). Networking is key, especially for firms like Barclays and UBS, where alumni support can make a difference.
    • OCR is accessible, and some students even start as freshmen. However, networking beyond OCR is crucial for firms where UNC is not a primary target.
  4. Advice for Incoming Freshmen:

    • Focus on building a strong GPA and developing technical skills early on.
    • Start networking with alumni and attending info sessions hosted by UFS and other clubs.
    • Don’t stress about not being in a top club; instead, focus on consistent effort and leveraging available resources.

In summary, while clubs can provide opportunities, they are not the be-all and end-all at UNC. Your success will depend on your dedication, networking, and preparation throughout your college years.

PMT, Reynolds, Catalyst guarantee a top placement. UMAG and WMA are also great. Impact, PEVC, and CCAG are mostly resume fillers. In terms of what they look for, its 25% high school resume and 75% networking. They are looking at hundreds of apps and won't even look at most resumes unless you are extremely cracked. Spend the summer cold emailing all the exec members of the club and hopping on calls with them and you will be in a great spot come fall recruiting.

No clubs guarantee placement. All of the finance clubs at UNC just take the kids who are serious about recruitment and know they will place. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get into any, just focus on yourself, keep building connections, and the rest will follow.

UNC is a semi-target with strong placement but insane competition. Duke get's most of the love in the area but clubs and networking can help you land a good position. It's true that the OOS/scholarship kids get most of the good placements.

If you have a solid gpa 3.5+ you will get in somewhere. Even if you're non KF you can get a credit rotational seat at a money center or large regional. Don't dismiss or be discouraged if you end up in one of these seats, plenty of my fellow tarheels did 12-18 months in these roles and lateraled to IB or some other high finance seat. Some even stay as it's long-term a better fit for most. You'd be surprised how diluted the competition gets outside of the gigs everyone is going after. Clubs are great but make sure you go to every info session for every bank you can, forming those personal connections early goes a long way.

As a freshman try to get into PMT, UNC Special Situations, UMAG, and WMA. You will be fine if you get into these - definitely network with upperclassmen

Would say recruiting at Unc has vastly improved.

Targets for the following: BofA, WF, DB, JPM, jefferies, Raymond James, piper, Blair (mm names in the south)

Lean more semi: gs

Nontarget: still relatively nontarget at the boutiques

Unc’s club scene is really good and the clubs help place kids due to self selectiveness but also training. Reynolds, Catalyst, m&a group, all solid. Would say it’d be good to be in the clubs but not needed to get an offer. Overall, impressed by unc improving and think the future is bright.

For NY IB, UNC recruiting is awful unless you're in certain frats / programs. There is virtually no recruiting at EBs, and BB recruiting is extremely political and a large part of getting an OCR interview is out of your control. Even the clubs mentioned above not that useful, most of them just self-select high-achieving kids that would've gotten offers anyway. Ideally I would move to a Vandy / Emory / UVA / Michigan if I were you

Yeehaw southern IB, go Carolina Panthers, coupled with bojangles and food from Lenoir!
