Unique Situation Advice Needed...
I recently received an offer from a MM/Boutique bank (think a few hundred employees) not a household name but a name IB professionals would recognize.
It's unique because the role would be an analyst position in a remote office location (not much of a IB presence in the location). Basically, there's an MD that covers a very specific sector and he needs an analyst to help him.
Here's the catch there would be no other employees: no other MDs, VPs, Associates, and only possibly one other analyst.
On one hand I think this is a good opportunity because of the one on one time I'd be spending with a senior level guy.
On the other hand I think this would limit my networking abilities and since my ultimate goal is to go buyside, I don't know how this would look to a PE firm.
To be clear I don't have any other FT offers right now and ultimately, although I have a couple other opportunities coming up that I feel reasonably confident about beggars can't be choosers.
So what do you guys think if you were in this situation would you jump at an opportunity like or would you run.
I would say run if you can get another offer. Since they won't give the opportunity to network with other junior bankers, this is a serious downside for you because that means that you won't have as many connections in case you want to go to another firm later on in your career. I can't deny that it would be good to work with a senior banker, but the networking opportunities being that limited are a serious issue.
I'm with you on the networking side but, don't want to be left empty-handed.
Would it be better to start there with the intention to lateral after a year? Or do you think it would be hard to lateral out of a situation like this?
Also assuming the worst and this MD is let go, would I be at risk too?
You just have to use a cost-benefit analysis. The potential and already realized costs already outweigh the benefits of taking the job, so do not take it. There is always another banks you can work at. I know that feeling do not get me wrong, but you will find that job that works for you eventually.
Wouldn’t take it.
