US Corporate Banking with UK Target Master

Hey everyone,

How feasible is it for a non-US citizen, but with a UK target degree (LSE, LBS, Imperial, UCL, etc.) and top grades, to break into Corporate Banking as an Analyst in the US (not NYC, but rather SF, Chicago), with various M&A internships (Big 4, MM, Boutique, etc.)?

Of course, the visa is a challenge, but do you think exceptions might be made for such a profile?

Breaking into US Corporate Banking as a non-US citizen with a UK target degree and strong credentials is challenging but not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Visa Challenges: Visa sponsorship is a significant hurdle. US banks often prioritize candidates who don't require sponsorship due to the cost and complexity. However, exceptions can be made for exceptional profiles, especially if you bring unique skills or experiences that stand out.

  2. Leverage Your UK Target Degree: A degree from LSE, LBS, Imperial, or UCL is highly regarded, but US banks typically prioritize candidates from US target schools. Highlighting your top grades and internships will be crucial to offset this.

  3. Internship Experience: Your M&A internships (Big 4, MM, Boutique) are valuable, but US banks may still prefer candidates with direct US experience. If possible, try to secure an internship in the US to demonstrate familiarity with the market.

  4. Networking: Networking is critical. Build connections with professionals in Corporate Banking in your target cities (SF, Chicago). Alumni from your UK school working in the US can be a great resource.

  5. Target Regional Offices: Non-NYC offices (like SF and Chicago) may have slightly less competitive hiring processes compared to NYC. This could work in your favor.

  6. Alternative Pathways: Consider applying for roles in the UK or other regions first, then transferring internally to the US. Some banks are more open to internal mobility once you've proven yourself.

  7. Visa Options: Explore visa options like the TN-1 (if you're Canadian or Mexican) or the H-1B. Some roles may align with the "Economist" classification under the TN-1 visa, as noted in WSO threads.

While the path is tough, a combination of strong academics, relevant internships, strategic networking, and persistence can improve your chances.
