People use MBAs to break into S&T..its just that the percentages are low. People who are getting an MBA to get into S&T are people who did not get S&T right out of undergrad. Once you are in S&T, the opportunity cost of getting an MBA is not worth it. For a top MBA, you need three years of experience (and even then you need to answer the essay question "How will this MBA help your career?"---which is hard for people looking to get back into S&T. Three years out you will be making a few hundred K a year, add that 150K it takes to go to B-school (not including the lost work experience) and you can see why not many S&T guysget MBAs. Also, an MBA is mandatory for IB/PE, not for S&T.

I know several people who used/are using an MBA to get into S,T, and R--they come from top programs, and are only part of a small group---most of their classmates took consulting or IB/PE.
