Using University Career Centre

I'm a freshman undergrad business student and I have just been wondering about the best ways to use the career centre and whether there is any opportunities that aren't often taken advantage of by students. The business school at my university has its own career centre separate from that of the rest of the university.

I know I read a post recently that stated not to trust advice from the career centre, but is this generally the case?

Any perspectives would be greatly appreciated.

Its not bad, just understand its limitations. I'm not sure what your UCC is like, but mine is full of life long HR reps who basically make every resume through a standard template and don't know much about any industry besides what they get in promotional brochures. If you are lucky some may have some industry experience in consulting or marketing, but I've never seen anyone who used to work in finance at one of these things.

Don't solely rely on the career center for recruiting. Go outside the box, network, etc. That being said, there ARE a lot of resources that you can use at the career center (i.e. practice interviews, networking events, resume help). Just be sure to use it effectively, so don't go to an info session and stand around with a bunch of your friends and then ask one dumb question and expect to have somehow made an impression.

If the adviser says 'you're all set' before you have even landed an internship/full-time job, DO NOT LISTEN. Worst advice ever. You can always be networking or practicing for interviews.
