Wall street career future, hs grad student
hi.. im a gr 12 student selecting my universities presently.. i live in canada and im applying to programs across the country.. including.. ubc, mcgill, sfu, queens etc.. i'm wondering what education path do I need to take to end up a high level professional, in an investment firm, and other types of firms (etc..) with a successfull salary and career..
Do I need a bcom.. then internship then mba.. ba then right into mba then career at goldman, morgan stanley, jp etc..
what path do i need to take.. i need lots of help..
and are going to univ in Canada and are planning to stay in Canada, then your best bet is to go to Queen's Commerce or the Western program. Laurier has a good business program as well but it is not as good as the previous two. The "typical" path for your early career is that in the summer of your third year you will aim to get an internship which you hope will turn into a full time offer. you will then work 2-3 years, maybe take 1 more job then do an mba, or go straight into an mba.
However, this is the "standard" route, remember there are lots of different ways to go about it, depending on what you really want to do, it is not set in stone that you have to do an mba. If you don't do an internship it's not defintie you won't get a job. The above, as I mentioned, is the prescribed route only.
If you are interested in moving to the US consider McGill, as it is very well thought of in the US. When you're applying look at the business programs, where they place students, do some research on career paths for alumni. Figure out which program is stronger at Finance, or maybe is more marketing focussed etc. Off the top of my head I don't think UBC is that great, what is SFU?
Anyway, remember, everyone on here has either been in or is in your position, you've a long way to go, just make sure you choose a univ and program that will fulfill you in more ways than simply getting a job, try to find the right balance. Good luck.
