Want to break into IB, had a few questions

I was thinking of applying to the following colleges

Safety/Targets: Penn State (Smeal), IU Kelly, Fordham, SMU, Boston College, CUNY, BYU Provo, Drexel, Babson, Villanova, U Richmond and Bentley University.
Reaches/Giga reaches: Anything else in the top20-30 list for IB recruitment. The ivies, NYU, Stanford, UVA, UT Austin, Northwestern, etc.

My top-most realistic pick is definitely boston college by a mile, and any of the reaches/giga reaches are pretty unlikely for me. I have not looked into any of the top LAC's but I would be open to if that is optimal for IB placement.

I was thinking of transferring if I can't get into an optimal school for IB, and I wanted some advice. Anything will be appreciated, thank you.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about your college list and strategy for breaking into IB:

Safety/Target Schools:

  1. Penn State (Smeal): Strong alumni network and the Nittany Lion Fund are standout features. However, it's considered a semi-target, so you'll need to hustle for NYC IB roles.
  2. IU Kelley: Kelley is a solid choice, especially if you can get into the Investment Banking Workshop (IBW). The IBW places ~80 candidates annually into top firms, but competition is fierce, and your freshman year involvement is critical.
  3. Fordham: Proximity to NYC is a plus, but it's generally considered a semi-target. Strong grades and networking are essential here.
  4. SMU: Great for regional placement, especially in Dallas or Houston. It’s not a strong NYC target, but alumni connections can help.
  5. Boston College: A solid target for IB, with good placement into NYC. It’s a great realistic pick for you.
  6. CUNY (Baruch): Known for its affordability and proximity to NYC, Baruch punches above its weight due to its alumni network.
  7. BYU Provo: Not a traditional target, but BYU has a tight-knit alumni base that can help with placement.
  8. Drexel: Not a strong target for IB. You’d need to rely heavily on networking.
  9. Babson: Known for entrepreneurship, but not a strong IB target.
  10. Villanova: A semi-target with decent placement. Alumni connections are key.
  11. University of Richmond: Not a traditional target, but it has a small, supportive alumni network.
  12. Bentley University: Similar to Babson, it’s not a strong IB target.

Reaches/Giga Reaches:

  • Top 20-30 Schools for IB Recruitment: Ivy League schools, NYU Stern, Stanford, UVA (McIntire), UT Austin (McCombs), Northwestern, and others are all strong targets. These schools have robust on-campus recruiting and alumni networks that make breaking into IB significantly easier.

Liberal Arts Colleges (LACs):

  • Top LACs like Williams, Amherst, and Swarthmore are worth considering. They are considered sleeper targets for IB due to their strong alumni networks and tight-knit communities.

Transfer Strategy:

  • If you don’t get into an optimal school for IB, transferring is a viable option. Schools like NYU Stern, UVA McIntire, and UMich Ross are transfer-friendly and have strong IB placement. However, transferring into these programs is competitive, so maintaining a high GPA and building a strong application is crucial.

Recommendations:

  1. Focus on Networking: Regardless of the school you attend, networking is critical. Start reaching out to alumni and professionals early.
  2. Consider the IB Workshop at IU Kelley: If you choose Kelley, aim to get into the IBW as it significantly boosts your chances.
  3. Evaluate Regional Preferences: If you’re open to working outside NYC, schools like SMU and BYU can offer strong regional opportunities.
  4. Keep Grades High: A strong GPA will be essential, especially if you plan to transfer or apply to competitive IB roles.

If Boston College is your top realistic pick, it’s a great choice with solid IB placement. However, if you’re open to exploring top LACs or transfer options, those could also enhance your chances.

Take the summer to draft application essays and get into a school first. You should not be thinking about transferring colleges as a high school junior.

Ok, sounds good. I will grind out my ECs and SAT over the summer, and take more rigorous courses in my senior year. Wish me luck.

If you’re currently a junior you need to get the SAT done ASAP. Aim for 1500 at a minimum. Also, while courses and ECs for senior year certainly matter, the majority of the decision is based on how you frame yourself throughout high school (eg gaining leadership in clubs, GPA trends, continued rigorous STEM coursework).

Agree with person above ^ try your best and work hard. It doesn’t matter where you go to college, yes it helps because you get your foot through the door easier but I went to a extreme non-target and going to a respected MM firm. Also, enjoy high school man

If you don't mind sharing, what school did you attend?

If I can get my SAT and ECs to where I want them to be by the end of the summer, I will be competitive for BC CSOM in a finance and math double major if I ED. That's my target school as of right now.

Apply to niche programs at some of the top schools and you might get lucky. I'm a Cornell student and know schools like ILR and Hotel will overlook GPA and test scores if you write a killer essay and have a few extracurriculars that line up. I had no business getting into Cornell but that strategy worked for me. Once you're on campus there's no difference in recruiting between majors. I'm sure there's some similar schools that have back / side doors like this.

Keep in mind "prestige" and recruiting opportunities also aren't the same. A school like BC has a tight alumni network and is  better to recruit from then schools you would see ranked above it on US News. Try to focus on colleges like that as well.
