Want to lateral but stuck with limited modeling experience

Hi, I'm looking to lateral from my current firm (regional boutique) to a MM. I've been an analyst for about a year now, but while I've had exposure to all parts of the M&A process, I really didn't get to work on the models much on my deals, other than updating them with the most current financials. I was told that first years at my firm don’t really build models (although I don’t think that’s true) I feel like I haven't gotten the modeling and technical experience that one should have gotten as a first year. I know that my interviewers will ask details on my modeling experience, so is there a way to angle this better? Honestly, I would be willing to be hired as a first year, but don't know how to word that..

If it helps I’ve closed about 3 sell side m&a deals ranging from 25 to 100M. Thanks!

A lot of analysts and associates in MM/BB groups have no closed deals on their resumes. IMO you should easily be able to lateral to a MM/BB/EB as long as you know those deals insight and out and I would just tell them you were the sole analyst driving the model to play yourself up. Also you could easily move to PE as well rn

In that case ask your VP if you can set up a time with him so he go go over anything you have questions about
