What can I do to secure a 2025 sophomore IB analyst internship?

I'm a rising sophomore (currently in freshman summer) at a target school. I major in Econ and have a good GPA (3.95+). While I had broad thoughts of wanting to pursue IB, when I started applying, the recruiting season for the 2025 summer was almost over (didn't know application season starts so early in March 2024).

I do have an "internship" this summer I got on LinkedIn which only requires me to attend ~10 2-hour pitch meetings of startup founders and write brief reports or something, but I doubt this is going to give me any practical benefits other than a very loose understanding of how startups work and a few lines on resume. I'm also currently learning how to use Excel and do corporate valuation through online courses along with some insight series.

Are there any 2025 IB internship opportunities that are still open? What else can I do in my Freshman year summer and Sophomore fall to get a better chance of getting an internship? I'm now thinking of applying to Fed Reserve Internships for my sophomore year. Thanks for reading and have a good day!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps you can take to secure a 2025 sophomore IB analyst internship and improve your chances:

1. Networking and Building Connections

  • Start Early: Begin networking as soon as possible. Reach out to alumni, professionals, and recruiters in the industry. Building relationships early can help you get on their radar for future opportunities.
  • Cold Emailing: Consider cold-emailing boutique investment banks. Mention your interest in internships and attach your resume. Be concise and professional in your communication.

2. Enhance Your Resume

  • Relevant Experience: While your current internship may not seem highly relevant, it still adds value to your resume. Highlight any skills or insights gained.
  • Additional Internships: Look for other finance-related internships, even if they are unpaid or at smaller firms. Experience in finance, even at a small scale, can be beneficial.
  • Federal Reserve Internship: Applying for a Federal Reserve internship is a good idea. It can provide valuable experience and make your resume stand out.

3. Skill Development

  • Excel and Valuation Skills: Continue learning Excel and corporate valuation through online courses. These skills are crucial for IB roles.
  • Insight Series: Participate in any available insight series or workshops offered by banks or financial institutions.

4. Application Strategy

  • Target Smaller Firms: Many small boutiques do not have structured recruiting programs and may still have openings. These firms can provide valuable experience and are often more flexible with their hiring timelines.
  • Prepare for Junior Year: While focusing on sophomore internships, also start preparing for junior year internships. Some big firms like Citi start their recruiting process over a year in advance.

5. Timeline Awareness

  • Recruiting Timeline: Be aware that recruiting for junior year internships can start as early as December of your sophomore year. Keep an eye on application deadlines and start preparing your applications early.

6. Leverage School Resources

  • Career Services: Utilize your school's career services for resume reviews, mock interviews, and networking events.
  • Clubs and Organizations: Join finance-related clubs and organizations at your school to gain more exposure and network with peers interested in IB.

7. Stay Informed

  • WSO Forums: Regularly check WSO forums for updates on recruiting timelines, open positions, and advice from other students and professionals.

By following these steps, you can enhance your chances of securing a 2025 sophomore IB analyst internship and build a strong foundation for your future career in investment banking. Good luck!

I saw people posting their sophomore internship results on LinkedIn so I thought it was over. Morgan Stanley opened back in March and some people already heard back. And from what I heard in an insight series, GS' revenue-generating divisions (Asset Management, IB, FICC Equities, etc.) are also almost done with the recruiting process already. Trying to look for other banks tho

Thats literally crazy. I was only aware of MS but knew the shots of landing it was rly low so I wasn’t hurt at all when I didn’t get past R2
