What do I wear?
I am sure this has been asked plenty of times, but I can't seem to find a reliable thread. Long story short, I come from a school that might just be the definition of non-target (Ag school, 2 alumni in IB in the past 15 years, etc.), and I just accepted a role at a MM firm in NY as an IB Summer Analyst. I have literally never stepped foot in an investment bank (or even NYC for that matter), and I am looking for some guidance on what is appropriate attire for a Summer Analyst to wear. If anyone has any tips on what to wear, where to find clothes, or just quality brands that entry level bankers wear, it would be much appreciated.
Just get some Brooks Bros and Charles Tyrwhitt. They are both good quality and relatively budget friendly.
There are a lot of threads on this site for how to dress well. Go to the fashion forum.
My advice would be to make sure all of your suits are well-tailored and your shirts fit properly. Ill-fitted clothes look sloppy. Stay on the neutral/safe side too, as an intern. Wear only white and light blue dress shirts; wear charcoal and navy suits, never black suits. For shoes, go get a nice pair of black oxford dress shoes. Take care of them and they'll last you years. Wear ties too, given that you're an intern.
Suits: Suit Supply / Brooks Brothers. Jos. A Bank if you're on a budget. Key is to make sure they're perfectly tailored
Shirts: Charles Tyrwhitt
Shoes: Allen Edmonds Park Ave / Alden / Carmina
Assuming you're a guy, keep it simple: black cap toes (johnston & murphy, cole haan, allen edmonds all good value), get yourself a dark navy suit (if you don't already have one - suitsupply), couple of pairs of navy and charcoal slacks, couple of white/blue shirts and subtle variations thereof (brooks brothers, charles tyrwhitt, bonobos, etc.) and you're good to go. Makes your life easy. Won't waste precious time trying to mix and match outfits, shoes, etc. when you could be sleeping/working, and you won't come off looking over-the-top. No one expects interns to look great - we know you're in college and therefore likely to be cash poor.
Interns are cash poor? Hell, most of the interns we take have parents who make more in a year than my entire net worth.
Question was posed by an IB intern. For PE interns, yes, that's definitely more often the case since many PE shops don't have formal internship programs and the internships they do give out are offered as a favor to family friends' kids and whatnot.
I’m worried about how I’m gonna pull together enough cash to not get laughed out of the office this summer based on my attire. Not complaining about my situation I’d just suggest you be more understanding of students coming from different situations and don’t make assumptions about what anyone can or can’t afford. Have a nice day.
Totally agree. Charles Tyrwhitt (I cannot spell this guys' last name for like forever) shirts are of good-quality and priced reasonably. IMO it's better than some Prada shirt that makes you look like Chad.
My advice would be to wear a suit, while holding the jacket in your arm that first day. After that day, you’ll see what everyone wears and can emulate that.
Typically, wearing a white and blue dress shirt with dark blue pants is the easy way to go.
Jos A Banks has lots of deals. People will care much more about your attitude then if you’re suit is fancy. In fact, too fancy a suit would draw unwanted attention to yourself.
As someone above noted, having properly fitting, appropriately conservative clothes is much more important than the brand. No one is going to check if your suit is fully-canvassed with pick stitching.
