What makes JPMorgan special?

Hi Guys,

I have a HireVue interview with JPMorgan coming up and I suspect they'll ask me: why JPMorgan?

I have my own reasons, but my perspective is limited as I'm basically an outsider - an undergrad.

To widen my perspective and get a better grasp on the firm: what do you think makes JPM special?

What do you respect about the firm, and about those that work there?

Thanks, in advance.

Ben.

"I met person X at this event and really hit it off with them. They introduced me to person Y a week later and I couldn't believe how much we had in common. We both lived in Z dorm and played for the same team! The way that X and Y spoke about their coworkers is indicative of how collegial the culture is at JP Morgan. It is unlike any other bank that I've spoken with- I cannot picture myself at any other firm. I can tell that a lot of work has been put into creating such a distinct working environment and I believe that I would be a strong addition to the *** group."

I was there last summer and loved my time there. I've spoken with a lot of banks and JPM was one of two banks that I absolutely got along with. When I said I liked the people/culture, it was one of two times I wasn't bullshitting when I spoke with the people there. The people are very intelligent (as with all banks), but they're pretty chill. They win lots of deals and everyone was busy as hell, but it didn't stop them from having almost weekly group happy hours in the summer.

And as the other commenter said, Jamie Dimon fucks. Hard.

This x1000. Everyone has heard about the lean deal teams, the senior exposure, the league tables, blah blah blah. Make it personal. A firm is just a collection of people. Talk about the people you met.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Just do a little research and rattle off a view ideas (i.e. strong training program, investment in juniors, international mobility).

They aren't looking for anything too crazy because you haven't worked there yet. They just want to see that you have put some thought into why you want to work there specifically, rather than just hitting submit on a bunch of online postings.

The best answer to the “why bank X?” question is going to be relatively the same for every bank. For boutiques and MM banks, point out the lean deal teams and increased exposure to senior bankers and clients. For BB banks, point out the exposure to larger and more complex transactions. Also point out your interest in the industry or products that the group covers or offers.

Then, walk through everyone you have networked with. The “why bank X?” is really a way to gauge the level of research you have done into the bank. By discussing who you have networked with, you are demonstrating that you are so interested in the bank that you actually took time to reach out to people. Furthermore, it gives you some credibility because hopefully these people will go to bat for you.
