What to do summer after frosh year?
I'm currently a freshman at a target and hope to pursue a job in finance, hopefully either in investment banking or consulting. I know its been discussed here before, but I was wondering which path I should go down this summer? I could get an internship at a big investment company that invests in real-estate, an internship in the European Union HQ, and could try applying to small-mid-sized IBs that high school or college alumni currently work at. Through my school, I could also travel abroad and do a summer long community service project. I could always chill and do nothing/work a little around town as well. What path would best set me up for an internship after sophomore year? (I guess the investment co/IB if I get lucky but I know if I do land one of those I'll probably be going on coffee on printer fixing runs all day)
travel abroad after freshman year especially if you are at a target and keep your grades up. Go have fun, dont think about finance and come back with some stories that will make you more interesting. Trust me there is more than enough time over the next four years to work. Not nearly enough time to travel. This wont necessarily set you up best for an internship next summer but neither will sitting around an office before you have learned accounting and finance.
In my old group travel was a big theme among the fit side. Everyone from MD through analyst was relatively well-traveled and everyone would toss around new ideas when others would plan their vacations. Had one associate who has been to like ~40 countries and another who took two years off pre B-School and biked from Alaska to the bottom of south america.
do something interesting - then you'll have an interesting story to tell during interviews.
...frosh...year?
PWM or boutique IB
Get a paid internship in some finance capacity, doesn't have to IB. Spend a semester your sophmore year studying abroad.
