When to start phasing in technicals?

Hey guys - currently planning out my course schedule for freshman and sophomore year.

I'm curious as to when's the best time to start taking classes that cover relevant info to technicals (like accounting, corp fin, etc).

I was thinking it might be best to start building up knowledge while also getting credit for it around spring of freshman year? At the same time, if it's too early, it might also be suboptimal / you start forgetting when sophomore spring interviews roll in?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  • Start Early: It's beneficial to start familiarizing yourself with technicals as early as freshman year. This helps you build a strong foundation and ensures you're not cramming last minute.

  • Course Selection: Consider taking classes that cover relevant information to technicals, such as accounting and corporate finance, around the spring of your freshman year. This timing allows you to build up knowledge gradually and get credit for it.

  • Continuous Review: To avoid forgetting the material by sophomore spring interviews, make sure to review and practice technicals regularly. This can be done through self-study, joining finance clubs, or participating in relevant internships.

  • Practice: As highlighted in previous WSO threads, practice is crucial. You only get good at technicals by going over them time and time again and understanding the concepts behind them.

  • Networking: Start networking early, ideally from freshman year. This helps you get your name out there and learn more about the industry, which can be beneficial when technical interviews come around.

By following these steps, you can ensure that you're well-prepared for technical interviews without the risk of forgetting important information.

My personal experience, general technicals don't take too long to learn. I learned like 80% of the technicals I know today from taking like 8 days during spring break last year to study the M&I400, then just study industry-specific technicals from the WSO Redbook as they come. If you want to 'strategize', then maybe start studying immediately after ur financial accounting class which you will probably take like 1st semester of sophomore year.

Landed MF PE out of undergrad and started studying techs my first sem of sophomore year. No reason to start in your freshman year.

you havent been studying since preschool? you're late to the party my guy
