Where do I Start? (Junior transfer into a target school)
Hello WSO,
I was accepted into a target school for this upcoming fall (Cornell AEM) from a CC. I will be starting as a first semester junior. I've been told by a friend that also transferred to a target that I am at a disadvantage and I need to hit the ground running.
I honestly have very little information on what I need to prepare and get ready for in hopes of getting a SA position for 2020. I've purchased Investment Banking by Rosenbaum and have started to dabble in reading it. I know my first semester I need to get my GPA as high as possible and get some extra-circulars under my belt to build my resume.
Any help in pointing me in the right direction, and finding resources to lead me forward would be awesome. If you seen a post similar to this this before a link would be dope.
First off congratulations - Cornell is a great school and will set you up moving forward throughout your career.
Having said that - 2020 Summer Analyst recruiting is already under way. I would recommend looking through forums here for specific banks (i.e. https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/morgan-stanley-2020-sa-hirevue-q…).
You should have access to an on campus recruiting portal through Cornell. Have you signed up for that? If they don't allow you in the portal until the fall I would recommend setting up an indeed account with your email - from there you can search '2020 Investment Banking Summer Analyst' and go from there. Again, a lot of these companies are well under way. I understand you won't have a GPA but even having Cornell on your resume will do wonders. Use the WSO resume template here -> https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/investment-banking-resume-templa…
That is a good book to read and is helpful - would also study up on what questions you may be asked here - https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/investment-banking-interview-que…
I'd quickly figure out your graduation timeline/ application strategy. Figure out if you want to graduate in 2 vs. 3 yrs. 3 will cost more and +1 year, but will give you more time to recruit, get good grades (spead out classes and take some easy classes), and give you more time in school. As an incoming junior alot of the recruiting is finished (or close to) and you don't even have any grades, so that +1 year may really help out in that respect.
Agree with this assessment as well - might not be bad idea to spread out classes/add a major and graduate in December of 2021 for a shot at SA recruiting 2021/FT 2022
First off thank you guys, these were some great responses and fast!
To answer your question @kendrick1993" I was planning on doing at least 1 extra semester so I can get the second summer in for recruiting. It would technically be my senior summer, but I am taking less credits when I first start in order to focus on getting a higher GPA.
For WillHunting I haven't signed up for the campus recruiting, let alone didn't know it existed until you mentioned it ( I imagine they would of gone over it during the beginning of the semester for the Dyson Orientation).
A follow up question I have is regarding my resume, I've heard it is controversial to put my Community college information on it. Since I have nothing at Cornell yet, would it be worth it putting that on it give a bit of a background/ substance to it? This would only be on my attempt for summer 2020 if I started to apply now.
And is it worth investing in the WSO interview prep courses as of now to get a leg up or wait a bit until im in school?
Thank you all !!!!!
I will defer to anyone that has transferred from CC to Ivy wants to chime in - my two cents is I would leave it off. If you want to have a bullet point below Cornell University saying “Transferred from CC of ...” go for it but I would just list Cornell and Expected Graduation date. After first semester I would replace that bullet point would take it off and replace with relevant coursework/clubs etc. WSO resume template is great imo.
Graduate a year later a recruit for 2021 SA. Not having any grades or involvement will be very tough.
