Will a bad SAT score hurt me in the long run?
In high school, I took the SAT once and scored a 1270. I managed to get into a semi/low target school with my GPA and extracurriculars. However, I’m starting to worry my SAT will hinder me from getting an IB internship or offer. Should I take it again? I am considering transferring to a bigger target school later too. But i’m a bit anxious how I should proceed with this SAT situation.
Would reccommend just resitting the text while in college. You have nonething too lose by doing so. This could haunt you all the way to PE recruiting many places have SAT cuttoffs far above yours.
It makes sense. Is there a way around it if I take the GMAT instead?
yes because SAT is highly correlated with intelligence quotient. Studies show that IQ actually may be an equally important predictor of success, and its not something you can improve. You are screwed. This is coming from an someone who is also an idiot so i empathize.
Just to give you some context into how inaccurate this is.
I scored a 25 out of 36 on the ACT my Sophomore year of high school. Ended up grinding my ass off studying the patterns, the language, vocabulary, learning how to make more efficient use of my time, etc. Took over a dozen practice tests, meticulously counted every mistake and where to improve. I literally became sociopathic tiers of obsessed about improving my score. At some point it became a game to me and was quite fun.
Scored 35 prior to applying for colleges. Perfect scores in the Reading, Writing, and English sections.
Test scores being a signal for IQ is the biggest load of horseshit. It’s a signal for who has the time, money, or obsession to improve their score.
The fact that you couldn't sense the sarcasm speaks to the fact that you got a 25/36 on your ACT
Completely agree.
My first SAT was a 1390, six months later I scored a 1600.
It is 100% a test of memorization.
IB also takes no iq tho so it could be the perfect job for an idiot grinder, thats why im here.
Does not really matter at all. Do not worry, get good grades in college and network and you will be fine.
just lie and say that u never took the SAT bc of covid and you went test optional. a high score on the GMAT will prove that u could have scored high on your SAT
In IB and my highest SAT score was a 1250
You would have to take the GMAT during sophomore year to be ready for SA recruiting, which isn’t a good idea. There’s a 5 year window on GMAT scores before they expire so you would burn two of your years in undergrad and be limited on when you could apply for an MBA. It would also seem weird to interviewers that you took it that early - it may raise some eyebrows and do more harm than good. Finally, GMAT studying to get a respectable score (750+) is a much bigger time commitment and is much harder than doing well on the SAT.
I retook the ACT in college. I had a decent score but it was definitely lower than most students at target schools. I was worried it would be a negative on my application and felt I could do better pretty easily (I was harder working and more focused in college than high school) so I invested only ~10 hours or so in retaking the test and got a better score - not perfect but good enough where no one could look down on it.
Did I need the higher score? Maybe not. But honestly it was worth it to alleviate my anxieties and have one less thing to worry about.
I scored lower than you and Im at an EB now. You'll be fine. Just get good grades in college. However, they do ask during PE recruiting so I would recommend taking the GMAT.
No it will not. Have never been asked about ACT/SAT in my career. Experience > test scores.
Going to second the comment on PE recruiting - all the headhunters and many firms will ask for it, highly recommend retaking in college and trying to score 1400+
Scored in that ballpark on both the SAT/ACT and I am at a BB. It's never come up.
My SAT score was under 1300 (assuming that scoring didn't change from the 2400 -> 1600 switch) and I've done just fine
That said if you're really worried about it and plan to do PE oncycle, I would just retake it, it's not a big time sink. Maybe consider the ACT if that test is better for you. Especially if you want to transfer, just spend a few hours a week studying and try to get a respectable score. Don't need a 1550 by any means. That said, it's not that hard to land banking from a semi target so don't feel like you need to transfer, but it may come up for PE recruiting.
GMAT is okay, wouldn't be my first choice. The test is harder and you'd need a seriously good score for PE firms to not say "that's cool, where's your SAT score?" - that type of score takes months and months of studying even if you're good at standardized tests. Also, score is only good for 5 years, so if you're just entering college the score will more than likely expire worthless in a few years.
Currently have a BB IB offer and I scored a 27 on the ACT (1260-1290 SAT equivalent). You’ll be fine. Be personable and work hard and you’ll set yourself apart from someone with a perfect SAT/ACT score that has no communication skills
