You get a text from your MD mid PE interview - what do you do?

If you got a text in an interview from your MD in a PE interview, what would you do, especially if u didn't take the day and are wfh. There’s typically a rule that you should respond to your Md within 10-20 mins — if you know an interview will run long, do you tell the interviewer u need a second?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how to handle this situation:

  1. Prioritize Professionalism in the Interview: During an interview, your focus should be on the interviewer. Avoid checking your phone unless absolutely necessary. Having your phone on silent and out of sight is the best practice.

  2. Plan Ahead: If you anticipate an interview running long and know you might receive an urgent text from your MD, inform the interviewer at the start. For example, you could say, "I want to give you my full attention, but I may need to briefly step away if I receive an urgent message from my team."

  3. Handle the Situation Gracefully: If you do receive a text during the interview and it's critical to respond:

    • Politely excuse yourself. Say something like, "I apologize, but I need to quickly address an urgent matter from my team. I’ll only take a moment."
    • Step out, respond promptly, and return to the interview as quickly as possible.
  4. Avoid Overusing This Approach: This should only be done for truly urgent situations. If it’s not critical, wait until the interview concludes to respond.

Remember, maintaining professionalism and respect for the interviewer’s time is key.

You’re… interviewing… who cares? You supposedly have an excuse as to why you’re not at the office. If the MD pings you with your dentist’s arm halfway in your mouth are you asking him to stop the root canal to look at v32 of the pitch deck?

Again you’re out of there in less than 2 years, who cares if you reply to an MD 15-20 min late? If you are this concerned about that you should have blocked the time off for an appointment.
