Advice on re-recruiting FT

I am a sophomore in college at a target school. I was fortunate enough to get a SA27 offer last week that I accepted from a good MM bank (HL/RBC/WF). In no way am I trying to sound ungrateful, however, as I look ahead, it seems like exit-opps are much more limited coming from a non-BB/EB, especially if I want to exit to HF/VC.

How difficult is re-recruiting to BB/EB? How can I best prepare myself? (Sophomore summer internship, personal projects, research, etc.) Any help would be much appreciated.

Just keep in touch w ur network throughout the next year -don’t mention recruiting - then mid way through internship reach out to key contacts and let them know you’d like to get in a process if their group is having one.Only reason I’d do an internship sophomore summer is u want to somehow position urself for another group. Ie do a internship at an Econ consulting firm and then rerecruit to DCM or LEVFIN

Not that hard if you have people in ur corner

I’d also not think too much about this until you’ve actually hit the desk

Re-recruiting to a BB/EB from a solid MM bank is definitely possible, but it requires strategic planning and execution. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach it:

1. Leverage Your Current Internship

  • Excel in Your Role: Perform exceptionally well during your MM internship. Strong recommendations and tangible achievements will make your resume stand out.
  • Network Internally: Build relationships with senior bankers and colleagues who can vouch for your skills and work ethic.

2. Networking is Key

  • Start Early: Begin reaching out to alumni and professionals at BB/EBs as soon as possible. Use LinkedIn and your school’s alumni network to connect.
  • Informational Calls: Schedule informational interviews to learn about their experiences and express your interest in transitioning.
  • Stay Consistent: Networking is a long game. Keep in touch with your contacts and update them on your progress.

3. Enhance Your Profile

  • Personal Projects: Work on finance-related projects, such as building financial models or conducting equity research, to showcase your technical skills.
  • Certifications: Consider pursuing certifications like the CFA Level 1 or Wall Street Prep courses to strengthen your technical foundation.
  • Extracurriculars: Join finance clubs or investment groups at your school to demonstrate your passion for the industry.

4. Prepare for Interviews

  • Technical Mastery: BB/EB interviews are rigorous, so ensure you’re well-versed in technical concepts, valuation methods, and financial modeling.
  • Behavioral Questions: Practice articulating your story, focusing on why you want to transition to a BB/EB and how your MM experience has prepared you.
  • Case Studies: If you’re targeting EBs, be ready for case studies that test your strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

5. Timing and Strategy

  • Junior Year Recruiting: Most BB/EBs recruit for junior summer internships during your sophomore year. Be proactive and apply early.
  • Leverage Your MM Offer: Use your MM experience as a stepping stone. Highlight the skills and exposure you’ve gained to position yourself as a strong candidate.

6. Exit Opportunities

  • Focus on Groups with Strong Exit Opps: If you’re re-recruiting, target groups like M&A or industry-specific teams that have better placement into HFs/VCs.
  • Branding Matters: BB/EB names carry weight for exits, so emphasize your desire to gain broader exposure and work on high-profile deals.

By excelling in your current role, networking strategically, and preparing thoroughly, you can significantly improve your chances of transitioning to a BB/EB. Good luck!

rerecruiting from mm to bb/eb is doable but the technical bar is meaningfully higher. The 400 questions guide will get you through an MM process but seriously won't cut it at evercore or pjt. Those processes tend to test a bunch of nicher and out of guide questions especially for ft

So really start building your technical foundation early. For out of the guide stuff most people use marginofalpha so start that prep early. Then really also sharpen your behaviorals on what you worked on that summer, why you'd like to lateral, etc. Start early with the technical prep because once the summer starts you'll have no time at all.
