AIMS Hedge Fund GS
From the description I can't tell if this is an operations job, or something that will actually help get into investment management.
It sounds like a lot of bitch work and not really helping with understanding the investment process or modeling. Anyone disagree?
I'm trying to make a career switch and seeing what's out there.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about this business.
I don't understand why you'd think this is bitch work. It seems like what you'd be doing is the crux of the business (i.e., investment management). If this is bitch work, I don't think you'll be happier anywhere higher up in the chain either.
These two particularly seem to focus on the investment process or modeling like you wanted:
You're not going to be in charge right when you start, but that applies pretty much anywhere. I think this job has career potential, but someone with more knowledge / experience can correct me if I'm wrong.
It depends on where you'd like to end up in the investment management universe
This role prepares you to be an asset allocator--allocating capital to a manager and then monitoring their performance. In a sense, you're an investor, but you're investing in managers and their platforms. Those managers then in turn invest that capital in stocks, bonds, etc...
If you want to be a research analyst at a hedge fund and eventually a portfolio manager then there are better roles that prepare you than this. It's not impossible to break in from this spot but it's tough b/c your background is not directly relevant. That said, you get exposed to lots of different managers, funds, and their strategies, which will help you figure out where you might fit in, which strategy aligns w/your investment style, etc...
These types of roles prepare you well for staying in asset allocation related roles. Some examples would be fund of funds, investment consulting (e.g., Cambridge Associates, Mercer), or endowments/pension funds/other large pools of capital that allocates money to hedge funds, PE funds, etc...
For what it's worth, have a friend that is doing this at GS. Friend seems happy but he's early in his career and is enjoying getting exposed to the space.
