Alternatives to US IB for Intl Students

Am an international student sophomore with experience in equity research, project finance models, DCFs, comps, LBOs, and debt instruments on resume. Also have pitch competitions, case competitions, and roles in business club at my terget school. However, the 2027 SA and 28 FT outlook for non citizens and GCs seem extremely bleak. Wondering what alternatives there are for high finance in other markets that are feasible. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, London, SG? Not really sure what the options are right now. Really do not want to work in home country because the comp is terrible for entry level roles and would rather not go to grad school immediately.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some alternatives for international students like you aiming for high finance roles outside the US:

  1. London:

    • London remains one of the most accessible markets for international students, especially for those with strong resumes like yours. Many BBs, EBs, and MMs sponsor work visas in the UK.
    • Focus on applying to firms like GS, JPM, MS, Rothschild, Moelis, Lazard, and Evercore.
    • Keep in mind that competition is fierce, and prior internships or relevant experience will be critical.
  2. Singapore (SG):

    • Singapore is a major financial hub in APAC and offers opportunities in IB, private equity, and asset management.
    • However, as noted in WSO threads, SA classes in Singapore are often filled by target and semi-target students from the US and other regions, making it highly competitive.
    • Networking is key, and you should target BBs and EBs with a presence in Singapore.
  3. Dubai/Abu Dhabi:

    • These markets are growing in prominence for IB and private equity, particularly in sovereign wealth funds and family offices.
    • While deal flow may not match London or New York, compensation is tax-free, and there’s a preference for candidates with international exposure.
    • Consider applying to firms with a strong MENA presence or sovereign wealth funds like Mubadala or ADIA.
  4. Australia:

    • If your school timeline aligns, Australia could be an option. However, as noted in WSO discussions, SA recruiting in Australia can be challenging for international students due to visa issues and the local recruiting timeline.
    • FT roles might be more feasible, but competition is tough.
  5. Hong Kong:

    • Hong Kong is another APAC hub, but recent political and economic changes have made it less attractive for some.
    • Still, BBs and EBs with a strong presence in Asia often recruit here, and it’s worth exploring if you’re open to the region.

Key Tips:

  • Networking: Regardless of the market, networking is crucial. Reach out to alumni, attend events, and leverage LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your target regions.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Research which firms in your target markets are more likely to sponsor work visas.
  • Leverage Your Experience: Highlight your technical skills (DCF, LBOs, comps) and extracurriculars (pitch and case competitions) to stand out.
  • Flexibility: Be open to starting in a smaller market or boutique firm to gain experience before transitioning to a larger market.

If you’re determined to avoid grad school immediately, focus on building a strong network and applying strategically to firms in these regions.
