Ask College 'Acquaintance' to Pass Along Resume?

Hey guys, wanted your opinion on something:

There is a job opening at a small company I wish to apply to and I noticed on Linked-in that I know someone who works there - a person who I went to college with and is fairly senior though in a different division. This person and I were friendly in college - had some mutual friends in the same circles, went to the same spots to party, had some classes together, etc. but we were not "friends." Since finishing college (few years ago now), we have not spoken though we connected on Linked-in a long while ago.

Would it be strange and/or creepy to reach out to him via a Linked-in message and ask how everything is going, etc. and then mention the job and see if he would be willing to internally refer me? I believe it will be fairly obvious that I am reaching out solely about the position but cannot really afford to go back and forth several times before broaching the subject (by that time, the job opportunity may already be filled or interviewing underway). What do you think?

Message him on LinkedIn telling him about the position within the firm. Then say, if you have any time I would like to catch up and hear more about the company. At this meeting you express your interest in the company saying "oh wow what you do sounds like the most interesting thing in the world, can you refer me for the position? I'd love to work at your company"
