Asking for an extension, after already asking for one

Hi All, I asked for an extension earlier this year on a summer 2019 SA offer, and was granted it. However, I have realized that I need more time, and was wondering what the best way to go about asking for another extension would be. My main problem is that the original extension I asked for was for almost a month, and this second one would also be for nearly a month. Is that too much? Will it make me look bad?

A month extension is extremely generous, I would not ask for another. Get the other firm to accelerate or just accept/decline the offer.

I thought as much, what was your last excuse? I don't think it would be wise to try extend unless you can give a reason that is out of your hands. What sort of role / firm is it you are currently accepted to and what are the characteristics of where you want to apply for? Could you not just accept the offer and apply for this other firm and see what happens with regards to an offer and take it from there? I can't imagine extending this offer and then swapping to another firm will go down well / any better than going to this one and applying elsewhere and then swapping. You could always use sick days / holiday to sit interviews?

My personal thought is that just from my intuition I believed you were looking elsewhere which would make me think the current offer would think the same. Therefore unless something completely out of your control happened I would not try and extended as the firm will see through it.

Anecdotal experiences would lead me to say this, (didn’t happen to me happened to a friend recruting a prior year), he asked for an extension, received it. Asked again, this time he didn’t get an email from recruitment but instead an email from a sector head he interviewed with telling him that they can’t allow for a further extension and to really consider if his offer “was worth it to him as a candidate, they would love to have him but because there are plenty of hungry young candidates anxious to work there as well if he’s not totally set on the firm.” though disclaimer this wasn’t a Bulge Bracket, but a very reputable IB firm. won’t further give away details, but just remember these aren’t robots you’re talking to it’s real people investing time into finding candidates.
