Bad reference around the neck?

I had an internship in a non-finance field last year, and the internship ended really badly because of a crazy, crazy boss. This is the only time something like this has happened to me.

I did a lot of good work for them and they're a fairly big name in my previous field. HR won't get back to my emails, but I think they're only allowed to tell dates of employment and salary (I wasn't paid). I've been out of college for a couple of years and am hoping to get an MMS next year. Will this crap still matter?

What if I don't get the MMS, and thus have to rely more on my work history?

HR does know me because the office I was at was small, and the lady's kind of a bitch. However-- HR can only give dates, right, unless they want to be sued? I also have someone else who was at the company who can vouch for me as a personal reference.
