BB tech vs. Brokerage
I am currently a freshman and looking to gain some experience for the summer and ultimately land an investment banking or sales and trading gig for the next summer. Right now my choices for internship this summer are either working at a BB's tech department or working at a brokerage firm.
Which, in your opinion, will give me the most exposure/experience in the field and prepare me for next year's recruiting? I am attracted to the fact that the first one is a BB, but at the same time have heard rumors that doing technical would trap me within that department in the future.
Thanks for your input!
its your freshman year, you won't get pigeon holed into a role when most people are still camp counselors.
so the BB tech internship is better?
do the one that pays more, so probably BB tech
If you are just fixing computers and setting up people's outlook I would do the brokerage house. Either way you are ahead of the game.
do the BB and network your ass off so that you can get an SA position eventually
I dunno, if you want to do finance I am not sure that working in the tech department will be very useful. I think it would be better to do the brokerage, then maybe use that to try to get a BB PWM internship sophomore year, then use that experience to network at the BBs. Or you could do tech BB and try to let anyone in IBD/PWM that you meet that finance is what you really want to do and the tech job is just for $$.
Personally I'd take the brokerage but if you think you will get a chance to meet with some of the IBD/PWM guys at the BB, then you may want to go for that. The internship experience itself though will not be useful whatsoever for your resume other than to show you worked that summer rather than went to the beach all day.
