Below the business school gpa cutoff, should I transfer or is IB un reachable ?

I f*led up and my gpa is at a 3.3. I was planning on getting into cox(Smu) but the cutoff is 3.5 and I won’t be able to boost my gpa come this spring when I would need to apply. I know I can boost my gpa going forward. Should I transfer to another college and get into their business school and work towards an internship or should I just change career paths? I was thinking on transferring to the university of Alabama. Their UA iba program looks promising and I would automatically be accepted to the business school. Or should I try TCU? Has anyone ever experienced this situation and still managed to get into IB ? I think my shot now would be at an EB at the best.

If you extend graduation 1 semester (making you 1 year lower in class) would you be able to re-apply the following spring?

I would do that and stick with SMU over transferring to UA or TCU. If you can get a 3.6 or so by the time recruiting rolls around, you will be fine for SMU recruiting, especially if you are in a frat and the upperclassmen can help you. Use January and summer terms to take easy GPA boosters.

Think you'd be shooting yourself in the foot by transferring. TCU has lower placement - you really need to be in Neeley Fellows which you would not get into (average GPA is over 3.9), and at UA you would also need a 4.0 or close to it in order to be competitive. If you can somewhat salvage your GPA and get an internship or two, SMU should be able to get you to Houston IB pretty easily.

Also EBs are extremely competitive and care heavily about GPA, often more than BBs. If you can get back about the 3.5 you are fine for BB/MM/regional boutique

I see - tough situation. I would lean toward staying at SMU, maybe do some research on LinkedIn and see if any econ majors have ever placed into IB. Hit them up if so and find out how they did it. Pick up the business minor too so you get some basic accounting/finance classes. You're going to have to network your butt off, but Dallas is a pretty big city and you can be doing part-time internships during each semester which will help bulk up your application.

The issue with transferring is it's a ton of effort, and any of the schools you'd be able to get into with a fairly low GPA will all have some sort of IB pipeline program you would need a very strong GPA to get into... so despite having a finance major, you would end up at a likely worse school and have a narrower path to IB. At least SMU has strong placement to leverage.
