Big 4 Audit Chartered Accountant to IBD/Asset Management/Equity Research/ What else?

Hi Guys,

I'm relatively new here and have been reading mixed opinions on this topic. Would really appreciate some advice.

Until recently, I have wanted to go into S&T. However I have become worried about the lack of skills I would gain, and now I am looking for other options. My passion being in markets, the obvious option would be to do Equity Research, and then end up at a hedge fund. But I used up all my applications on S&T.

My offers currently stand at:

Big 4 Audit

2 week internship at a HF with £20bn AUM, but they do not recruit from the internship. Complete this then do a masters and reapply for EQR next year, with this on my CV.

I have been reading about the options that Big 4 Audit can lead to. Can I do 3 years of audit then go to Asset management? or would I need to do TAS/Deals first? What about M&A? Hedge fund analyst?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

It sounds like you should do the 2 week hedge fund internship anyway if it fits within your schedule. Typically people work for 2-4 years and then do a top MBA to allow access to many opportunities. If you go big 4, just work really hard and get good recommendations.

Thanks for the response- is an MBA crucial or do you think its possible to move straight from audit to Hedge fund/ ER/ PE?

Anything is possible. You’d probably have to get an interview through an alumni or friend.

For ER, if you start writing up good reports to prove yourself, you might be able to make the switch.

Good luck.
