Looking for internship/career advice

Hi,
Given my current scenario, I would like some direction. My dream career would be that in private equity/venture capital
Here is my current background:
I am an Economics student from a non-target university (non-russell group), sitting on a 1st (Nearing 80% average), achieved AAB at A-Level.
I am currently on my placement year at the Office for National Statistics, and I have two previous internships provided by my university- One in data management (worked with VBA/PowerPivot), and the other working in research (Stata).
I have been studying the FMVA/CMSA courses offered by CFI, and I will be sitting the CFA Level 1 in August 2024.
My network consists of many lower level investment analysts, and some associates, but mainly other university students who have either had some internship experience, and hope to break into IB. I have also not spoken to a large majority of my connections, or know them personally.
I have recently signed up to a few of those 'equality programmes' like SEO London, and UpReach
I am reading the FT Lex Column to gain a greater contextual understanding beyond the theory.

Last academic year (just for some extra context), I applied to a boutique VC firm, and had completed 5 interviews with them, and another meeting after that. After the meeting, somebody would "definitely be in touch with me", but the deal never materialised, hence why I am currently at ONS (my insurance).

I am unaware of any mentorship schemes, and am now in my penultimate year at university.

I am eager to gain internship experience, either in Corporate Finance, Valuations, Big4 (But only would accept a technology/tax role), FP&A, or IB/PE/VC in a boutique.
I am currently applying to spring weeks and summer internships in the hopes I get lucky (I understand that spring weeks are aimed at 1st years, and 2nd years if on a 4 year course), and summer internships are traditionally in second year), however due to the flexibility of the Civil Service, I would be able to allocate my annual leave and work overtime to allow this internship to take place.

I am also willing to relocate globally for this internship experience.

Please could anybody suggest the 'right' career path for me?

Hey there! It sounds like you're really dedicated and have a clear vision of where you want to go, which is fantastic. Here are a few pieces of advice based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Grades Matter: Keep up the good work with your grades. They can open doors, especially when you're coming from a non-target school.

  2. Networking is Key: You've already started building your network, which is great. Don't be afraid to reach out to those connections you haven't spoken to yet. A simple email asking for a quick chat to learn more about their experiences can go a long way. Remember, people generally like to talk about themselves and their achievements.

  3. Internships: You're on the right track with applying for spring weeks and summer internships. These experiences can be invaluable for gaining practical experience and making connections in the industry. Don't limit yourself to just one area, explore different fields to find what suits you best.

  4. Mentorship: Look for mentorship opportunities within your network. Having a mentor in the industry can provide you with guidance, advice, and potentially even job opportunities.

  5. Certifications: Your pursuit of certifications like the FMVA/CMSA and CFA Level 1 is commendable. These will certainly add value to your profile.

  6. Stay Open: While you have a clear goal in mind, stay open to other opportunities that may come your way. You never know where they might lead.

Remember, there's no one 'right' career path. It's all about finding what works for you and where you feel you can make a difference. Keep up the hard work and stay persistent. You're on the right track!
