Bulge bracket WM Internship

I have secured a BB WM Summer analyst internship with pay of ~34/hour and this is my first (and only) internship I’ve received an offer for. I’m going into my junior year at a semi-target and I have seen some mixed reviews on this wealth management branch as a whole. I was wondering if this internship is good enough to pursue in order to progress my career (ideally to a FA role) or if I should keep looking elsewhere. What would y’all’s recommend?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, securing a Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofA ML) Summer Analyst internship in Wealth Management (WM) is a solid opportunity, especially as your first and only internship offer. Here’s why it’s worth considering:

  1. Reputation and Experience: BofA ML is a well-known name in the financial industry, and having it on your resume can open doors for future opportunities. Even if Wealth Management isn't your ultimate goal, the experience and brand recognition can be leveraged for other roles.

  2. Pay and Compensation: A pay rate of ~$34/hour is competitive for internships, especially in WM. It reflects the value of the experience and the resources BofA ML invests in its interns.

  3. Career Progression: If your goal is to become a Financial Advisor (FA), this internship aligns well with that path. It will provide you with exposure to client management, portfolio strategies, and the overall wealth management process, which are critical skills for an FA role.

  4. Networking Opportunities: Interning at a large institution like BofA ML gives you access to a vast network of professionals. Use this time to build relationships with mentors and colleagues who can guide your career.

  5. Mixed Reviews: While you’ve seen mixed reviews about BofA and WM, remember that experiences can vary by team, location, and individual expectations. Focus on making the most of your internship by being proactive, learning as much as possible, and demonstrating your value.

Recommendations:

  • Pursue the Internship: Since this is your first offer and aligns with your career goals, it’s a great starting point. It’s better to gain experience now rather than wait for another opportunity that may not materialize.
  • Keep Networking: Even during the internship, continue networking and exploring other opportunities for the future. This will help you transition to other roles if needed.
  • Leverage the Experience: Use this internship to build a strong foundation in WM and position yourself for full-time offers or other roles in finance.

In summary, this internship is a good stepping stone for your career, especially if you aim to become a Financial Advisor. Make the most of it, and it will likely pay dividends in the long run!
