Can I take the offer and then rescind if I get a different offer

I have a wealth management internship offer pending, I am more interested in Investment Banking and I am still waiting on a couple of companies to get back to me for an IB internship. All these companies are in different states and some are in different countries. The Wealth management offer is expiring soon and I do not know what to do. Can I sign the offer and rescind it if I was given one of the IB offers? Is there a "blacklist" that I would be placed on if I did accept and then rescind? This will be my final internship so I need to get the best position.

Funniest

can you? yes

just tell your contact that a personal family situation came up and you won't be able to attend the internship.

you run the risk of getting blackballed at the firm...but this way, you potentially mitigate that, from the "personal family situation". Most firms won't bother to ask...and if they do, you can just say that its a private family matter, and you hope to be able to interview next year for the internship for the following summer.

If they still ask for detail, you can just say that you'll be caring for a family member with development issues, and that will take all your time. (sortof true...in the back of your mind, you'll be thinking "myself")

-note- don't put your other actual internship on linkedin or any other social media so you don't get caught....i feel like this is obvious...but just in case you are an idiot...

just google it...you're welcome

I did this (in different circumstances) definitely burned bridges, I switched industries which made it better and told them so. I told them the truth and most of the people in the group understood.

I did this in my junior year. Definitely NOT something you want to get accustomed to doing. It's okay because this is an internship and not a job offer. To the firm I rescinded from, I told the truth. A better opportunity presented itself. It was a great choice, tough though. Further, by rescinding you open up your spot to a lucky fellow who now has an internship!

What do you call an economist who forecasts? Wrong!

In that case my response would be in line with others.

Can you rescind? Yeah. Could it come back to bite you in the butt? For sure

I personally wouldn't feel right, regardless of what everyone else does / what the norm is, to lie about or stretch any truth to fit my own needs.

I asked a similar question once and was told "you really think companies take the time, effort, manpower, and money to maintain, update, and share a 'blacklist' with one another?"

Is it possible you happen to rub someone the wrong way, come across them later in your career and they remember? Yeah for sure, but you could yell at someone driving badly and they happen to be a VP at a bank that holds a grudge.
