Canadian citizen applying for TN Visa
I received an offer to join a US bank as an analyst (trading) and will need a TN visa to get through the border. I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics (major is math/business administration), so naturally I believe that I should be applying through the Mathematician occupation as the job letter can be reworded to explain my responsibilities specifically touching on things like data analysis to support business decisions, interpreting data/reporting conclusions drawn from mathematical analysis, deciding what data is needed to answer specific questions, etc. The employer's law firm wants to apply through the accountant or economist route, although I have a B.Math. I genuinely feel more confident going down the mathematician route because that's where my degree is in, and I can definitely see a scenario where the border agent says B.Math degree is not the correct educational background for an economist role.
I am aware that post-2017, there have been changes to economist to prevent financial analysts coming in through that occupation, so I think my mathematics bachelor degree gives me a unique advantage.
Really concerned about this and looking for thoughts!
I've wrote about TN Visas quite a lot. My simple recommendation is to listen to the lawyer and iterate if you get rejected.
If you get rejected you get a few more attempts. Better to listen now, fail, then recalibrate all for the cost of a $50 application at the border. FWIW, in this case the Economist category has a chance whereas accountant has almost a 0% chance. Good luck man!

Yes listen to your lawyer. FYI I got in on as a management consultant and I have no degree. I just listened to what my lawyer told me to do and have a strong paper trail supporting it.
Yeah but management consultant is actually an approved occupation for the TN unlike a financial analyst or investment banker. So even if you have no education, if you have a job at McKinsey then you’re good to go since you’re not actually trying to game the system at all like bankers are.

Does the wording of economics or accounting have to be on the degree?
