China Summer Internship - Investment Banking
Hello all,
Im a second year undergraduate at a Spanish university looking for an investment banking summer internship in China. Ive come to see that any available internships have to be secured through an intermediary, which come at a very high cost i.e. CRCC Asia (+- 3000$)... It is also particularly difficult to access any opportunity considering I have no contacts (I have been told this is how it goes in China)
So my question is: Does anyone know another way to access these opportunities without the cost/intermediary?
Would love to hear anyone's two cents on the matter. Thanks.
It is very difficult for someone without connections to get an internships in China. The banks and firms rarely have online applications and most get their internships through word of mouth and referrals. A friend of mine interned at Bank of America (IBD) and PwC (assurance) in Beijing during his freshman and sophomore summer. He said the only reason why he got the job was because he knows people at the firm. Since you are going to school in Spain, it will be harder because most of the Chinese firms want brand name colleges in the US and UK.

Opportunely, i have got an internship offer from one investment banking firm in China ( the company specializes in M&A and international investment with a strong management team). But the problem is that it is almost unpaid internship.
I just wonder if this internship would be worth it for my future finance career.
why didn't you get a full time offer at your private equity job? what did you do in the summer of your second year? and why are you still looking for internships now that you've already graduated. do you have any FT offers?
anyway, i was under the impression that a lot of UK students went on to go to Msc in finance after their 3 year education. have you considered this at all?
you need to try and weigh the opportunitiy cost of your internship- if you realistically don't see yourself getting another job or going back to school, then it's really your only choice. an unpaid internship isn't good, but if you think you can convert it into a full time offer, then maybe not. do you have any statistics on how often they take interns on for full time? how long is your internship to be?
i probably had more questions than answers for you, but im sure you'll figure something out

The internship will be for 3 months and i possible can convert it to full-offer position ( 40% chance ). The main reason i am still looking for an internship position instead of full-time offer is that i have to complete national service , which will last for 2 years. Do you think it is worth taking this opportunity. As long as i can have tradtional IB experience ( such as Valuation , DD and so on ), then i am ok with unpaid internship position. Having had many interviews with several PE and IB firms in the past several months, i have full realized the fact that IB is a very tough industry to get in and even together to work in.
Finish your compulsory military service first ASAP then think. You'd rather be discharged from the military younger because that was what I did as well. I am turning 35 and outperforming all of my college mates by a few miles, given that I was the ONLY person who didn't go for grad school in my class, instead I went straight to the army. The key issue here is I started working full time at age 25 when they just started military service. Think "gap risk" in a different form.
Time is very expensive. Unless you have a second passport. And no, I'm not from Korea.
