Clarification Regarding JP Morgan Rankings

at JP Morgan the title goes from

Associate to VP, how come there is nothing in between like AVP or AD?

Are there different levels of Associate?

glass door shows that there are AVP, but it doesn't seems to exist in reality.

I am currently an AVP and would like to take a position with JPM, so I wanted to be sure that I am not going backwards by taking the "Associate" title

Could someone maybe work or worked at jpm clarify this, thanks

Does the Title of Assistant Vice President Exist at JP Morgan?

As one user points out - every firm has a different system. Typically, an assistant vice president is the equivalent of a high-level associate or a low level vice president. The assistant vice president distinction is prominent in operations departments / back office roles. However, our users also pointed out that monetary rankings are more important than titles. A high performing associate at one firm could theoretically make more than a low level vice president at another firm. It's all relative.

Every firm has a different system. But generally AVP signifies that you are a high level associate or perhaps a very low level VP at a firm that has the Analyst->Associate->VP->SVP->MD system.

In reality, rank shouldn't matter to you all that much, especially in this economy. If anything, the higher your rank, the more strings and less cash come attached to your bonus and employment terms.

In this economy, cash is king. Better to be an analyst earning $500K/year than a VP earning $200K. Unless you want to get into management, making VP does not get you closer to your end goal. (Early retirement, starting a small business, "exit opps" at hedge funds or PE shops)

AVP is often a back- or middle-office title. This dates back to a convention that certain things had to be signed off on by a VP-level employee. I know several people my age (~3-5 years out of undergrad) with AVP titles in various back- and middle-office functions, such risk-related roles for commercial and retail banking. It's completely unrelated and incomparable to a VP role in a front-office hierarchy.

^^^ While true, a number of European banks employ it across the board for IBD and S&T.

At my firm, we have an "Associate Program" in S&T, but none of the firm's 20,000 people have a corporate rank of "Associate". The ranking system is Graduate----->AVP->VP->Director->MD

Associates start as very senior Graduates and don't get the AVP rank until they've been here about a year. Then it's a year or two before they make VP.

Regardless, the only point of corporate ranks in trading is how much of your bonus gets paid in stock. Your manager is the one who wants you to be a VP or an SVP. YOU on the other had want to get as much money paid in immediately vested cash as possible, and that's largely a function of your performance.

thanks for the responses, but I need an answer more specific to JP Morgan. The economy and other firms are not part of my concern for this particular question.

Is there no AVP or AD level position at JPM? Are there different levels of Associate (i.e. I/II/III or jr/sr/lead), before reaching VP at JPM?

Looking through some recent JPM CIMs I see Exec Directors but no AVPs. This covers mostly syndicated and lev fin group and industry coverage groups.

Also, sr associate, sr vp, etc etc exist within Corp Treasury and similar roles.

i also got to know that within an associate we have senior associate and junior associate. Does anyone know the criteria of classification? what is the number of years of exp required for senior associate?
