Coffee Chat Invitation Question

Hi all,

So I’ve been working at a small startup for a year now with a very established founder with an expansive network. I do a small amount of admin work and have access to a lot of emails/contact info from his network. Obviously I don’t plan at being at this company forever and I want to start planting seeds now. Would there be any sort of complications from using my access to these emails to reach out to some of these individuals for coffee chats/ informational interviews

I wouldn't poach from emails, but instead reach out to them if you meet them personally.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice regarding your situation:

  1. Ethical Considerations:

    • Confidentiality: Using contact information obtained through your current job for personal networking can be ethically questionable. Ensure you are not violating any company policies or confidentiality agreements.
    • Transparency: If you decide to reach out, be transparent about how you obtained their contact information. Mention your current role and how you came across their details.
  2. Crafting Your Email:

    • Keep it Short and to the Point: As suggested by DCDigger, keep your email concise. Mention your admiration for their work or a specific project they were involved in.
    • Ask for Advice or Feedback: Instead of directly asking for a job, request advice or feedback. This approach is flattering and creates a sense of reciprocity.
    • Sample Script:

Hi Name, I came across your contact information through my current role at [Startup Name], where I work closely with [Founder’s Name]. I was particularly impressed by [specific project/talk/article] you were involved in and would love to learn more about your experience. Would you be open to a coffee chat or a brief phone call? My only objective is to make a new connection and gain some insights from your expertise. Best regards, [Your Name]
  3. Building Long-term Relationships:

    • Mentorship Approach: Approach these interactions with the goal of building long-term relationships rather than immediate job opportunities. As mentioned in the WSO content, seeking mentorship and staying in touch can be beneficial in the long run.
    • Follow-up: After the initial meeting, send a thank you note and keep them updated on your progress. This shows your appreciation and keeps the connection alive.
  4. Success Stories:

    • High Hit Rate: According to DCDigger, reaching out for coffee chats with no agenda other than meeting interesting people has a high success rate (around 75%).
    • Real-life Examples: Many professionals on WSO have successfully used coffee chats to secure jobs and build networks. For instance, one user secured a job in real estate development through consistent coffee chats and networking.

By following these guidelines, you can effectively leverage your current position to build valuable connections while maintaining ethical standards.
