Meeting alumnus for coffee, may lead to an internship at boutique--should i wear a suit? or is business casual appropriate?

Tuxedo. Preferably with tails.
In all seriousness, go with the suit, you can't go wrong.
Suit with no tie/top button. You hedge against both extremes - looking like a slob and looking too formal (since you are a student and it is a coffee meeting). That's my take.

Buy a pre-owned navy suit off ebay, and get it tailored if you have to. Appearances matter for the FO broski.
and i think if i wear a suit ill set a different tone to the meeting, rather than an informal meeting/convo where it can be more personal rather than interviewesque
Wear a lighter shirt (non-white). Will lighten things up.
If you wore Khakis, I'd walk right back out.
