Cold Email to MD (looking for advice for urgent networking)

So recently I have come across a very unique opportunity with a bank that I was not aware of before. I am in the second round of applications of a rolling process and I have done no networking as of right now because I did not know a place like this existed prior to a week ago. I am attempting to cold email MDs of this firm and was wondering if you could give me advice on how to phrase my email. Here is the draft I have:

Dear xyz,

Hi I am ______ a student at (target school) studying Physics with a concentration in Business and Material Science Engineering. I am very interested in ________, and I recently discovered _________, so I am slightly late to the process for applying for 2022 analyst positions. (the website has profiles of all the MDs so here I will include some common interest). I was wondering if you could have a conversation with me to give me guidance on how to best position myself for applying for this internship given my late arrival. I have attached my resume below.

Sincerely,

Considering you are in the second round of this process, your email doesn't make sense. Asking for "guidance on how to best position yourself for applying for this internship" doesn't really make sense because if you are in the second round, you obviously already applied. Also, is this MD an alum? If not, bold move cold emailing MD's in the middle of recruiting.

In my honest opinion, don't try to network now because I think it is already too late given you are in the process. I was in a similar situation, didn't do any networking, dropped my resume, and then had a first round, made it to the second round, made it to super day, and then got an offer. While networking can help a lot, at the end of the day it is all about how well you interview. Goodluck with whatever you decide.

I understand what you're saying, but this is a specific place I would consider choosing over a GS or a MS and that is something that I am sure a lot of recruits have done. It is my impression that you either network or get nothing. These MDs all went to my school and are from similar backgrounds to me. Some I can relate to a lot beyond just being an alum. I guess a good equivalent questions is if I am applying to a bank like Evercore or Moelis or Goldman TMT in the middle of second round would any networking help?

Ah interesting. That is fair, there are def some (probably a lot) of banks that you basically have to network to get an offer at. Also, the MDs all going to your school helps a ton. if there are no analysts/associate alums that you can reach out to, cold emailing MDs is probably fair game. If you do, just make sure you ask good/quality questions that can't be found on the internet. After that, if you are personable, you will probably be fine. Best of luck

Don’t do it. If you genuinely email these people it can go one of a few ways. It can maybe go positive and they reach out and you chat. It can go in a way that they read it, mean to reach out or forget to, or just delete it. Or, they can read it and realize the role is under them and either reach out to the respective people and put in a good word or something or just completely torpedo you because you enailed them. mD’s can be a tough hit, I don’t mean to discourage you, I’d wait to see how the 2nd rounds go then try to network with hiring managers or HR that you’ve already talked to, those are the ones you want.

Personally, I try and go through my entire network on LinkedIn, friends, contacts. See if they know anyone at the firm that they can introduce to you aka make a connection (ultimately a referral). I personally try and stay away from cold emailing people unless itsfinal rounds and you’re trying to make another connection. I’d try and network with the peipleyou met/people that might be on that team first. Have you send follow up thank you emails yet after your interviews? That’s a great way to do so. Happy to help you if you need it or have questions, I work for a VERY VERY well known IB so I’ve been around the block dude and know how the orocess works, shoot me a DM if you want help or have any questions.
