cold emails
situation - junior looking for IBD SA spot, going to nyc first week of january to meet some people, got Citi and b of a lined up, looking to add some more people to the list.
got some names off my school's alumni network site (not strong target but top 20) and emailed with pretty standard introduction and asking to talk or meet over those dates. havent got any responses yet after 2 days...should i just send resend the emails at a better time of day (sent them at 6:45 PM, midday would probably be easier for them to notice and respond)? or should i try cold calling these people? they are analysts and associates. sort of time-sensitive situation since i want to figure out how long i need to be in ny and book my flights accordingly.
thanks
If they didn't respond the first time, they're probably not too interested. They'll reply later on their own with an apology if they forgot. Don't push alums too much.
Yeah, I know this doesn't help much now, but it would've been better to have started earlier. Alumni can take much more than 2 days to respond, and still be very helpful - however, as the guy above me said, you're in a time sensitive situation but it's definitely not a good idea to push them too much.
I would give yourself some freedom in nyc, and hit them up with another email after a week, and another one the week after that (at which time you should already be in NY - which you can state in your e-mail, saying you can go right over to their office to meet them, which might give them more incentive to come out for a few minutes).
Just make sure you speak in the right tone. You want your follow-ups to be short, subtle but to the point and considerate and thankful of their time. If they don't want to talk to you, they won't, and you can't make them, so definitely don't put up a 'you should meet me' attitude.
Good luck, you've got a big chance here.
The poster above pretty much nailed it, you should listen to him. Also, don't send emails during dinnertime. It's not a huge deal, but you might as well maximize your odds of getting through.
yeah all this makes sense. 2 questions...
1) if i email the same people, do i say "i emailed you last week" or just act like it never happened and go on as normal
2) i have different some people at the same companies that i could try. as in, i already emailed an analyst and they didnt respond, but i have some associates i could try. what do you guys think about sending some shorter emails tomorrow (friday) around mid day?
thanks again
Mention it in the most subtle way possible. Definitely hit up the other people that you have. A good time is 10-11am or early afternoon as barely any work is being done.
sounds good, appreciate the advice everyone
