Corporate Banking Analyst vs Relationship Banking Associate

Hi All,

After internally networking like a dog at my BB for quite a while now, I have two possible career avenues that have arisen. I didn't expect to be presented with a potential option, but it seems that I may be a strong candidate for both positions. Being in a middle office function for two years has definitely left me hungry for a more intellectually stimulating role, which CB and RB both are comparatively. I'll sum up my assessment of the two options, but would love to hear if I'm wrong in my rationale.

I'm thinking that CB would be a better decision for my career for a few reasons. It has far more emphasis on technical skills which I lack formal experience for and would love to develop on the job. It seems to be a more prestigious career path within the bank, which would likely open up higher finance jobs in the future. The main cons are that I would have to start as an analyst (which doesn't seem too bad considering I'm still 24), and I'm also concerned that my lack of technical experience could hamper my chances of success.

RB is an interesting role as they cover far more products within the bank than CB. While I wouldn't be developing my technical skills as strongly, I assume that I could eventually transition into a sales position for any of these products in the future. The RB role would also have me remain at the associate level, and I could definitely see myself standing out in the crowd as it seems to be a slightly less competitive role.

TL;DR I think Corporate Banking is better for my career but also more challenging considering my lack of technical knowledge. I really just want to know if this is a clear cut decision in which I should aim for the CB analyst spot, or if there really are merits to potentially working as a relationship associate.
