You should also not focus significant efforts to chat with this one director nor feel entitled to a chat - you and other prospects are not his client, supervisor, employee or friend, but rather just a random student reaching out from the pool of hundreds of prospects who pop up in his recruiting inbox every year, he has no reason to respond to you at all. Be persistent in your search but network with people in other groups instead - their group could be very busy.

When I was in uni, similar events happened where I had some dialogue with some FT folk, but after they asked for my resume, I sent over my menu-format resume showing 3.3 gpa at the time, and some people likely thought I wasn't strong enough to join their group so they stopped responding after that. But once I pushed past 3.5, this no longer occurred.
