Demotivated - Seeking Advice
Hi all,
I graduated in 2022 from college with a 3.95 GPA. I got an internship at a top development firm in a VHCOL and eventually took the job doing office leasing. Never really interviewed anywhere else at the time as the job was awesome. They started me out at 60k base, but I was fine with it at the time because I was in front of the C-Suite all the time.
Fast forward about 3 years, and I’m not so happy anymore. My boss treats me unfair and I’m still grossly underpaid at ~65k. I could do 10 hours of work on something and if it’s missing a comma, it’s thrown out (not exaggerating). His perfectionism is getting in the way of me getting anything done anymore. Get a lot of verbal abuse, and it’s recently gotten to the point where I just can’t do it anymore.
I’ve started interviewing at other firms, but the market is just tough. I’m punching above my weight with my resume because I’m getting interviews for jobs that are 6-8 yoe in my industry. But even for some 4-6 yoe jobs, I’m just not closing. I’ve probably interviewed for 3-4 firms at this point, to no avail (I really don’t think my resume or interview skills are the problem here).
I talk to many people in my industry and they are all impressed with me. I’ve won awards and have prestigious industry roles that are given to the leaders of the industry. Yet at the same time, I’m being treated like a nothing from my boss at my company.
Feeling extremely demotivated here, especially because of how I’m treated and the unfair compensation. Advice on how to proceed / pivot here would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure your thoughts on going back to school for an MBA/MSRE/MRED, but that could always help. Ofc its expensive and doesn't guarantee anything so understand if that's a no for you. If you have any inclination towards brokerage, you could easily get a role doing leasing. Any of the big brokerages should pay you a draw at least equal to your salary now. I know someone with a similar background to you, joined a good team and is now doing pretty well. Another option is of course to keep trying, job markets tough rn and the more shots you put up the better chance you have of one going in.
