Different rules for a plain text resume? Google Resume...

I'm applying to a position at Google and they want a plain text (ASCII) format resume. I have the standard PDF and .doc formats of my resume, but I'm worried about the transition.

Why does Google want it in this format?
When in plain text, is it best to copy and paste the resume into the body of the email?
Is it okay for it to be over 1 page when in .txt format?
Thanks!

I’ve had to do it before for some application systems.

Just copy and paste your entire resume into the text box. I would spend a few minutes focusing on its readability, such as changing bullets to dashes. I’ve never seen an instance where a company requested an attachment of a .txt resume.

As for your questions: 1) Probably easier to data-mine, although usually there is an option to submit both plain text and an attached file 2) I never have seen a .txt document have a page count. I wouldn’t worry about it. If they are requesting a .txt file, format obviously isn’t a priority for them.

Thanks for the help Blueapple, so in your experience, you copied and pasted the resume into the body of the email? As opposed to sending it as an attachment?

I thought you were saying that there was a section in the resume submission process to copy and paste your resume. I’m confused. The position requires a .txt format of your resume, but via email, not from a text box submission. Is this correct?

If that is the case, I would follow directions and send the text file and not attach a .doc or .pdf file. I would be sure to mention somewhere in the body of the email that I would be happy to provide that format. It just strikes me as very weird that a company—Google, no less—would want a .txt resume submission via email. If the text file is not mandatory and there is a place to submit a properly formatted resume, by all means, do that option instead.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, yeah, there is an "Apply Now" button on the job description which takes you to the standard "fill in your bio, attach your resume" form, but there is also a line on the same page as the "Apply Now" button that says "For immediate consideration, please send a text (ASCII) or HTML version of your resume to [email protected]."

Turns out I have a contact at Google I wasn't even aware of, but I'm still interested for future reference...
