Difficulty Obtaining Job

Hello,

I am a recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Economics, where I also took CS classes, Real Estate classes, and Finance classes along with my core Econ classes. I had a relatively good GPA (3.3) and I have internship experience the past two summers as an FP&A intern and as a consulting intern primarily doing management and sales consulting but also a little bit of the financial side of succession planning. I have been trying to obtain employment in the financial services sector, specifically as a financial analyst but also been looking at real estate valuation and other analyst roles. I have had several interviews and feel that I have the necessary skills in order to do the jobs but either the companies proceed with different candidates or do not interview me at all. Looking for advice, ways to strengthen my cover letters and resumes, or specific job openings. Anything is appreciated. Thanks!

1) Depending on where you are looking atm, you might simply not be competitive enough. A GPA, the school brand, your character and personality and your internship experience will always be measured against other candidates. If you were in a batch of really good competitors, they may get picked over you. Sad, but it's the reality in 2021.

2) Like you, I also interviewed in multiple industries and for different roles within a corporation. I understand that more junior applicants could stray a little wider than the seasoned professional - just make sure you are applying for roles you are really interested in and you are really qualified for (ie technicals, facts, history of the company, latest news and regulation, "why this job", etc).

3) Are you using your network effectively? A referral goes a long way, especially without long-term formal experience.
