Direct Lending Exit Ops for Credit at BB bank

I'm currently an Associate 1 on the workout team at a BB bank, and I am looking for advice on how to transition into Direct Lending or Special Situations. My team handles bankruptcy and restructuring for the bank's principal loan positions. I’ve gained substantial hands-on deal experience from the lender’s side, but I find the idea of having 'skin in the game' on the investing side more appealing. The skills I’ve developed—such as deal execution, modeling, and memo writing—should translate well to these roles. However, I’m unsure how to position myself in a field that typically looks to candidates with experience in traditional investment banking or leveraged finance. I’d prefer to avoid making a lateral move if possible. Any advice on how to break into Direct Lending or Special Situations would be greatly appreciated!
