Director asked me to pass off some work to the other analysts, should I talk to him?
After a call today (it was just my director and I) he asked me not to take on anymore work, and if there's anything less critical to pass it off to the other analysts on the team. At first I didn't think anything of it, but after a little bit I thought it was weird. He's never asked me to take on less work and I've been his go to on a lot of projects and general things.
I tried to think of a deadline I might've missed or mistake I made recently that would've prompted it, but I can't think of anything. I know work quality isn't an issue because I've received two $50 recognition awards in the past three weeks from teams we support.
For context, I'm currently the only analyst staffed on about 4 different proposals we have going on right now. Two of them are highly visible, to the CEO and president of our division, but again I haven't missed deadlines or anything so I don't see how he can think my bandwidth is full. I can and would prefer to take on more work as I don't feel I'm at max capacity.
I honestly don't plan on passing off any work, but I'm not sure if I should ask him what was up with the comment, or if I should just let it go?
I remember when I first got into industry, my first company was at vanguard. My boss told me to stop working and give up my responsibilities to someone else. I thought nothing of it because I was ignorant and young and shortly after, I got laid off. Years later, I read an article on yahoo and the article was about signs you're about to get fired and one of the signs was your boss asking you to give up your work to someone else. I mean, it makes sense. If I were you, ask your boss for a one on one and ask about your performance and don't be scared to be direct but don't be passive aggressive. Be an adult about it. When I was at BMO, my boss was very passive aggressive and I never talked back or knew what to say. You need to learn to stand up for yourself and that's how you get respect. Well, you work hard to show up for it. I told my boss to give me another chance and he did. But I knew my job was on the line and my word was my bond.
Stop overthinking. If anything, it’s a good sign.
