E&F Investment Analyst - Am I Cooked?
Did I make a big mistake starting my career working for an endowment? I graduated from a non-target, but competitive liberal arts school and have worked for an endowment since then as an Investment Analyst.
Now two years later I'm looking for my next job and want to transition out of the E&F space to a role in equity research, asset management, or even more client-focused roles in PWM or product strategy. After months of networking with alumni and other connections who have expressed that I have a good background and sending in many applications, I have not gotten a single first round interview and am feeling like I don't really have many options. I have even applied to other endowments and foundations in roles that were very similar to mine and have either not heard back or gotten rejected.
I had initially thought beginning my career with an endowment would be a good place to start as it exposes you to a wide variety of asset classes, investment strategies, geographies, etc. but now I feel like it was a mistake to not start out in IB or PE. I know it can take time to secure something and the job market isn't the best right now, but I worry I set myself up poorly off the bat with my first job.
