Finance with Pure Mathematics or Statistics
I'm currently in University doing a double degree in Finance and Advanced Mathematics. My problem is in deciding whether I should do Statistics or Pure Mathematics as my math major. If any of you could give me some insight on the pros and cons of each major in terms of job prospects and salary, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all in advanced.
Pure math doesn't really open up that many paths directly but you can parlay it into a lot of different things, it definitely helps that you are also doing finance because the two together will do you lots of good. Statistics opens up something like actuarial science, which can be a very steady albeit (from what I hear) very static field. If you are looking only at careers in finance I think statistics would probably do you a lot more good than pure math. I can't see something like infinite dimension vector spaces being very applicable while something like regression analysis is/will be.
Like the last comment said, statistics is a more directly applicable field of study regarding business/finance. But financial services (specifically IB trading and hedge funds) seem to like the math major concept, maybe they just think you are smart.
I would honestly say, do whichever one you really enjoy. They both compliment a finance degree well. And at the same time, neither one is going to open up specific doors within finance.
