First Job in Ops, Where can I go from here?

Hey everyone,

I'm very new to the financial industry and was just hoping to get some ideas on where I could potentially take my career. I'm about 6 months into my current job, and it's my first out of school. I did not major in finance/business....

I currently work at a family wealth office/trust company. My title is "Client Service Administrator". I mainly work in our trust accounting system, linked to our brokerage accounts, just documenting and reconciling transactions for our clients. I move money for requests, print and mail checks, deposit contributions, open and close accounts, and perform general maintenance when things like inherited assets or corporate actions come in. I'm also doing the basic low level stuff: getting the mail, scanning and filing, running performance reports, etc.

I guess I'm just pretty naïve on how to build on this experience. I would really like to move to New York or Boston in a year or so and get out of my folks house... but I'm unsure if my job is unique to our small family office, or if I can market my skills elsewhere.

I'm also curious about the money. Salary is in the mid 30s right now and it's kind of a bummer, although I understand I'm not really worth much more at this point in my career. Are there more lucrative positions in operations? What should I try to learn/master in my current position to give me a better chance at a good job up north in a year?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice!
