For a student graduating in December, how feasible is it to start working in Feb/March vs. August?

Had to take a term off because of family so will now be taking an extra term and graduating in the winter rather than the spring of my class year (spring is unfeasible because my school prevents taking extra classes to graduate 'early'). I hope to start work relatively soon after graduating both because I'm already a bit behind my class and to help family out financially--I've heard of some folks who similarly graduated in the winter who started working either late winter/early spring but I'm not sure how feasible this is generally speaking. I'm a sophomore currently going through recruiting so don't have a particular bank in mind. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, starting work in February/March after a December graduation is feasible but depends on several factors:

  1. Firm-Specific Policies: Some firms may allow early starts if they have an immediate need for labor, while others may prefer aligning new hires with their standard training programs, which often begin in the summer (e.g., August). It's best to inquire directly with the firm once you receive an offer.

  2. Flexibility in Recruiting: Highlighting your availability to start early during the recruiting process can help. Some firms may accommodate this if they see value in bringing you on board sooner.

  3. Networking and Communication: If you're targeting specific banks, networking with alumni or current employees can provide insights into whether early starts are common or possible at those firms.

  4. Precedents: There are examples of individuals who graduated in December and started working earlier than the typical summer start date. However, this varies widely by firm and group.

  5. Alternative Options: If an early start isn't possible, consider short-term internships or contract roles in the interim to bridge the gap and gain additional experience.

Ultimately, while starting in February/March is possible, it will depend on the firm's needs and your ability to communicate your availability effectively during the recruiting process.

May vary by bank but I was at a MM over the summer and was asked to confirm my graduation date and given the option to begin FT in late winter instead of the following summer.
