Freshman Internships to Sophomore BB?
Hey everyone,
I'm currently a rising sophomore at a target school (Ivy). I finished my first year with a 3.8 GPA, and have two internships for this summer. One is at a global middle market investment bank, and the other is at a small search fund. I'm planning on applying for sophomore BB SA programs, but I'm waiting to apply until I do something at these internships that I can put on my resume. I was wondering how much these experiences will help me get an interview for sophomore SA programs, and whether it would have been more beneficial to be doing something like PWM at a BB this summer. In any case, how can I maximize my chances of securing an SA role at a BB next summer?
Just network really hard at places that take sophomore interns; however, even coming from an Ivy, it'll be super hard as almost all BB sophomore analysts are diversity. You seem like you'll be fine come junior year though even if you strike out on sophomore BBs.
I was looking at BAML and Citi's sophomore programs, which don't seem to be diversity only. I'm also looking at doing a virtual off-cycle fall internship at a small investment bank after the summer. I was just wondering if these experiences would put me ahead of the curve in terms of recruiting.
I dunno about Citi, but BofA *says* they're non-diversity, but in reality everyone from my school who got in was diversity. So I guess it's not totally impossible, but you're not going to have a good chance as non-diversity.
Don't spin your wheels on Citi. I know a guy who networked all the way up the chain and it's basically diversity only. He still got a good sophomore gig but like said above, all the BBs only take diverse sophomores.
There’s no way to answer this without knowing the firm. If it’s some shitty chop shop, do the search fund. I would do the MM IB internship if the firms’ partners have a decent pedigree. If not, search fund will set you up well for next summer.
I accepted both for this summer because the search fund is only a 15 hour a week time commitment. The investment bank is based in the UK and has a solid presence in India, and I'll be interning remotely for their Mumbai office.
