From brokerage to investment banking

Hey everyone, just got here and this is my first post on the forums (therefore, sorry if the question has been asked before - still working to figure stuff out here). My question is about the possibility of changing roles from a broker (or institutional sales) to an investment banking or an analyst role. However, I feel like I should give a bit of background first.

I started working in the wider industry a couple of years ago for a technology firm which I then left to become an institutional salesperson in a Tier 2 bank. While it opened up the door for me into the world of securities and gave exposure to sales and trading, after having worked there for a bit over a year I realized that my heart lies elsewhere and that the daily work of a broker doesn't really hit the spot for me (pounding phones and IB chats to clients most of the day, then wining and dining them in the evenings). I came to think that I would much prefer working in a more analytical role, that requires more in depth thinking and technical skills, like an analyst in the research department or on the DCM/ECM desk.

My question would therefore be: is this something that is done quite frequently after having spent a few years in the industry or would such a move already be too late for me (I'm in my late twenties) and I would be looking at a considerable paycut and would need to start from zero again in the new role? Has anyone done such a move or have any similar experience? Thanks, Mr. Madlow
