Career Resources
The job market for those transitioning out of investment banking into corporate roles can be challenging, especially in uncertain economic times. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights:
Corporate Job Market Challenges: The corporate finance job market can be tight, particularly for senior-level positions. Industries like real estate and finance are often described as "pyramid industries," where there are many junior-level roles but far fewer senior-level opportunities. This means competition can be fierce, and candidates need to stand out.
Importance of Staying Employed: One of the worst things for your career is prolonged unemployment. Being unemployed can make you less desirable to prospective employers. If you're considering a career shift, it's often better to transition while still employed, even if it means taking a less-than-ideal role temporarily.
Recruiting for Lateral Moves: If you're looking to move laterally into corporate roles, you may face competition from candidates with more directly relevant experience, such as those with post-MBA backgrounds. Staying connected with your network and actively monitoring job postings can help you identify opportunities.
Elasticity of the Finance Job Market: The finance job market is highly elastic, meaning it can fluctuate significantly based on external factors like economic downturns, company performance, or even group performance. This unpredictability underscores the importance of being proactive and adaptable in your job search.
Alternative Strategies: If you're struggling to find a corporate role, consider building skills or gaining experience in other ways, such as working on side projects, volunteering, or even starting a small venture. These activities can help fill gaps in your resume and demonstrate initiative.
Recruiting in the current environment may require persistence, flexibility, and a willingness to explore less traditional paths. Staying proactive and leveraging your network will be key to navigating this competitive landscape.

the best time since '08!
I’d recommend staying where you are now. Hiring is barely there and typical offers I’ve seen from other people are for lower pay or lower roles than what they have/had
